Weaker Dollar may affect barytes prices
Bentonite and barytes prices could be affected by a weakening dollar, a major European distributer
and processor said this week.
The weaker dollar could work to incentivise European imports, as both bentonite and barytes
produced within Europe become less competitive when compared to import prices.
Currently, bentonite, cat-litter grade 1-5 mm, FOB main European port, is priced at €42-60/tonne.
In comparison bentonite, cat-litter grade, ex-works Wyoming, USA is priced at between $42-$52/s.

The biggest impact of a weaker dollar would be felt more clearly in the barytes market, the
producer said. More imports of drilling-grade barytes could be seen from Morocco, rather than
India or China, he explained.
“Chinese and Indian barytes is usually priced in Europe, so if [the dollar] gets weaker it will cost
less to import from elsewhere. But the Indians and the Chinese are very savvy and I expect them
to push up at FOB.”
Barytes, drilling grade, unground lump, OCMA/API Bulk, SG 4.20 C&F North Sea (Morrocan) is
currently priced at between $100-$105/tonne. Drilling grade unground lump OCMA/API Bulk, SG
4.20 FOB Chennai meanwhile is priced at between $72-$72/tonne.
But so far high freight costs have meant that it has always been cheaper to buy European
bentonite as there are less hidden costs.
In any case, the distributer said that bentonite traded volume is down by an average of 3% year on
year.
